China's new special Mid-East envoy Wang Shijie arrived in Egypt Wednesday on the first stop of his maiden trip to the region aimed at reviving the peace process, an official in Cairo said.

Wang said he wanted to "hear the perspective of the Egyptian leadership on a settlement in the Middle East and the means of boosting cooperation between China and the Arab states to give impetus to the peace process," MENA news agency reported.

He is due to meet Thursday with Arab League chief Amr Mussa and Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher, with whom he is to review the "deadlock" in the Middle East peace process, an Egyptian foreign ministry official said.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said earlier this week that Wang's "main tasks will be to establish wide contacts with the relevant parties to exchange views on the Middle East peace stalemate."

Wang is also expected to visit Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories. (Albawaba.com)
