United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan on Saturday encouraged Sudan’s President Omar Al-Bashir and John Garang, head of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLA), to pursue their peace talks going on in Kenya.

A spokesman for the UN Chief issued a statement in Geneva saying Annan had spoken with both leaders by phone earlier on Saturday and "registered his satisfaction with the progress made to date."

He "urged the two sides to continue negotiating in good faith until peace prevails in the Sudan," the spokesman said, according to AFP.

The nearly two decade civil war between successive governments in Sudan's north and the SPLA in the south has claimed at least half a million lives and displaced over four million people. (Albawaba.com)
