Iran sent two warships to the Gulf of Aden on Wednesday, establishing a military presence off the coast of Yemen, Reuters reported.

Iran's new form of involvement comes while Saudi Arabia and its allies continue to conduct airstrikes against Iran-backed Houthi forces. State media said the vessels, the Alborz destroyer and Bushehr, sailed off of the southern coast of Iran to protect the country's shipping from pirates.

Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said the warships will patrol the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, an important shipping route between Europe and the Middle East.
