ALBAWABA – A viral video claiming that the long-running animated series The Simpsons anticipated the outcome of Egypt’s World Cup encounter versus Australia has been refuted by fact-checkers, who confirmed the footage was made using artificial intelligence.

A clip went viral on social media prior of the Round of 32 match stating The Simpsons had predicted a 1-1 draw and then an Egyptian win on penalties. The post instantly went viral as supporters shared it ahead of the fixture.

But an examination by Agence France-Presse’s Arabic fact-checking agency showed the video was doctored. A reverse image search led to a TikTok account posting AI-generated forecasts of World Cup matches in the style of The Simpsons. The account has now been taken down from the platform.”

Fact-checkers also found various indicators of tampering including warped writing, twisted faces in the crowd and wrong national flags not matching either Egypt or Australia. The original video contained a label suggesting it had been made using artificial intelligence.

This latest allegation is part of a yearslong trend of AI-created or digitally edited videos falsely claiming The Simpsons foretold key world events. Over the past few years, similar misinformation has shown up time and time again, on everything from the COVID-19 epidemic to foreign conflicts and significant athletic events.
