The German government continues to regard Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and his regime as a serious threat to peace and stability throughout the region, DPA in Berlin Thursday quoted the German parliament's press office as saying.
The German government's policy statement with regards to Iraq followed an inquiry by the opposition liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP). "The international community needs to do its utmost, to counter effectively this menace," the government said, according to IRNA.
"Therefore the federal (German) government seeks to increase its pressure on Saddam Hussein to resume his cooperation with the United Nations and allow the entry of arms inspectors into the country," it added.
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has repeatedly said that his country would not participate in a likely US-led attack on Iraq without a clear United Nations’ mandate. (Albawaba.com)
