ALBAWABA - Kylie Jenner and Cristiano Ronaldo lose millions in Instagram follower purge.
Instagram has experienced a dramatic shift in its follower count in the last few hours after the platform began removing large numbers of fake and bot accounts, which social media users have dubbed the “Great Cleanse of 2026.”
This strategy has resulted in significant losses for various celebrities and influencers globally, with millions of accounts departing from their following lists.
Kylie Jenner and Cristiano Ronaldo are among the biggest Instagram follower losses
One of the latest names to suffer a drop on the platform, Cristiano Ronaldo lost around 8 million followers while Kylie Jenner was the biggest victim, losing over 14 million in just a few hours.
Selena Gomez also lost about 6 million followers, which caused a wave of emotions among fans who were shocked by the rapid drop in followers.
Global Stars Hit by the Campaign
The campaign wasn’t limited to these names, but also included a large number of international celebrities such as Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and actress Priyanka Chopra, all of whom saw a significant drop in their follower counts.
Observers believe these losses indicate the prevalence of fraudulent accounts associated with these prominent accounts, particularly given the growing dependence on services that falsely inflate follower counts.
K-Pop Groups Have Not Escaped the Deletion
K-Pop groups were not immune to this tendency. Fans of BTS and BLACKPINK have witnessed a significant drop in their follower counts in recent hours, prompting doubts about the prevalence of phony accounts on major entertainment sites.
Meta intensifies its war against fake accounts.
Although Meta Platforms has yet to issue an official comment, sources suggest that the firm is conducting a massive campaign against phony and inactive accounts, as well as accounts tied to follower-buying services and false interaction.

The move is intended to boost the platform’s legitimacy and rid it of bogus accounts as part of the company’s efforts to improve the quality of digital interaction and restore trust in legitimate popularity metrics. There have been complaints about deletion and banning of real accounts. In tandem with the effort, a number of Threads platform users complained that their accounts had been deleted or suddenly restricted, raising concerns that some genuine accounts had been inadvertently swept up in the bulk deletion. A handful of content providers reported losing 2-5 percent of their followers, while celebrities faced substantially larger losses due to their huge follower counts.
A New Era of Digital Transparency
Observers feel that this effort has the potential to transform the landscape of social media influence by disclosing the true number of actual followers, as opposed to the false accounts that have long contributed to inflate the popularity of certain celebrities and influencers.
