With visits by US Vice President Dick Cheney and U.S. special envoy Anthony Zinni to the region so imminent, Egyptian President Honsi Mubarak spoke by telephone with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon Monday night, according to Haaretz.
The conversation was reported in an announcement made in Cairo late Monday night. According to the announcement, Sharon and Mubarak reviewed means of renewing talks in the region.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minster Benjamin Ben-Eliezer also spoke Monday with Mubarak and the two agreed that efforts should concentrate on achieving calm prior to Zinni's visit to the region. "An opportunity has been created, which must be taken advantage of, in order to achieve a cease-fire and the renewal of the diplomatic process, and Israel is ready to make this effort in earnest," Ben-Eliezer said.
