An estimated 3,000 Egyptian University students demonstrated Monday against Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's "repressive policy" against the Palestinians, police sources in Cairo said.
The students, who marched without incident at the Menufiyah University campus in the Nile Delta, also called on Arab leaders to "adopt firm positions against Israel during the Arab summit" scheduled for later this month in Beirut, they said, according to AFP.
They also denounced American policy in the Middle East, burning United States and Israeli flags, they added.
Public demonstrations have been forbidden in Egypt since a state of emergency was introduced in 1981.
They are however tolerated on university campuses, where several anti-Israel protests have taken place over recent days.
Meanwhile, in Oman, around 100 students and university staff chanting "Down, down Israel" demonstrated Monday for the second consecutive day against Israeli attacks on Palestinians, a correspondent reported.
The students, fewer in number than on Sunday, told reporters they hoped to awaken Arabs to the deaths of Palestinians by Israel.
The protest ended peacefully as it did on Sunday, the first reported demonstration over the latest Israeli-Palestinian violence in any of the conservative Gulf states. (Albawaba.com)
