Nearly 400 Iraqis, including opposition members, have returned to Baghdad via Amman since Iraqi President Saddam Hussein declared a general amnesty on October 20, the Iraqi embassy in Jordan’s capital said Tuesday.
"Since the amnesty, the embassy has issued temporary passports to 625 Iraqis ... who said they want to return to Iraq and take advantage of the amnesty," press officer Jawad al-Ali told AFP.
He added that 380 of them had already returned home, including opposition members.
"They are mostly former officials of the (ruling) Baath party, members of former communist parties and (Arab) nationalist figures," he said, adding that the number of people seeking to return was constantly increasing.
The Iraqi leader announced an amnesty for all prisoners to mark his new seven-year mandate as president following an October 15 referendum in which official totals showed he won 100 percent of the vote. (Albawaba.com)
