Activists in Saudi Arabia make a third attempt at defying the long-standing driving ban as some Saudi women take to the Kingdom's roads, paying no heed to the government's warning of a zero-tolerance policy towards anyone who attempts to "disturb public peace" by engaging in "Day of Female Driving" campaign to take place on October 26.
"It is known that women in Saudi are banned from driving and laws will be applied against violators and those who demonstrate in support" of this cause, interior ministry spokesman General Mansur al-Turki told AFP news agency.
Rights watchdog Amnesty international called on Saudi authorities to respect a woman's right to drive.
Activists behinde the campaign issued a petition demanding that the government issue driving licences to women has gathered close to 17,000 signatures. The campaigners further urged women to upload videos and pictures of them driving on social media sites. While the scene can hardly e described as thrilling, some have already scored over 100,000 web views.
