The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced Sunday that the Jewish PM would not meet with Pope Francis this week as scheduled, according to AFP.

The head of the Catholic church was supposed to meet with Netanyahu at the Vatican Wednesday, but diplomatic sources to AFP Sunday that the meeting would not take place. Netanyahu's spokesman further refused to comment on the cancellation.

Wednesday's meeting would have been the first meeting between the Jewish PM and the Catholic leader. Israeli news sources announced that the Pope will visit the Holy Land in March, but the Vatican has not yet confirmed the trip.

Israel's President Shimon Peres has previously met with Pope Francis earlier this year.
