At least 12 people were killed and 11 were injured, many seriously, when a speeding truck rammed into rescuers trying to help victims of an earlier collision, police said here Thursday.
Police spokesman Asuman Mugenyi said nine people died on the spot and three more died while being rushed to a nearby hospital.
The accident occurred at 10:00 a.m. (0700 GMT) near Luwero town, which is about 60 kilometres (35 miles) north of the Ugandan capital Kampala.
"A minibus heading for Luwero from Kampala found a Tata truck with mechanical problems on the road, but as it swayed to avoid it, another minibus heading for Kampala collided head-on with it," Mugenyi said.
As villagers rushed to rescue the victims, another speeding truck appeared suddenly and rammed into the wreckage, killing more people.
Nine people were taken to Kampala's Mulago Hospital in critical condition, while two were treated and discharged at the local Kasana dispensary – KAMPALA (AFP)
