A Turkish appeals court on Wednesday upheld a one-year jail sentence passed against former Islamist prime minister, Necmettin Erbakan, for incitement to racial or religious hatred, Anatolia news agency reported.

Erbakan, 74, was sentenced last March by a state security court in Diyarbakir, southeast Turkey, for declarations made on religion and Kurds during his Welfare party's electoral campaign in 1994.

He was banned from politics in 1998 when Welfare was closed down for anti-secular activities.

He will only serve five months in jail with remission - ANKARA (AFP)
