Trend Micro, Incorporated (TSE: 4704, NASDAQ: TMIC), a leader in network antivirus and content security software and services, has announced that it has entered into a global agreement with Ericsson to offer Trend Micro Mobile Security within the Ericsson Mobile Device Antivirus solution.
Ericsson will incorporate Trend Micro Mobile Security into Ericsson Mobile Device Antivirus as part of its Mobile Data Solutions portfolio, offered to enterprises and mobile operators interested in providing additional security measures to protect their end users from the growing threat of mobile malware.
“Today’s mobile devices are becoming mini-computers, and they are vulnerable to similar types of threats that traditional PCs encounter,” said Justin Doo, managing director, Trend Micro Middle East and Africa. “The number of people using hand-held devices in combination with their PC is growing. Organizations and operators should consider security requirements for protecting their users’ devices and the expanding network perimeter. Together, Ericsson and Trend Micro offer a robust solution to defend against the evolving malware threat. Trend Micro is delighted to enter into this partnership with Ericsson.”
Trend Micro anticipated the increased adoption of data-centric mobile devices, such as Smartphones, and, in 2004, it provided an early response to mobile-based security threats when it delivered the first version of Trend Micro Mobile Security. The solution is specifically designed for Smartphones running Symbian and Microsoft operating systems, providing advanced protection against malicious mobile code including SMS spam and mobile viruses.
The rising popularity of data-centric mobile devices is likely to make them an increasingly attractive target for writers of malicious code. Trend Micro TrendLabsSM, a global network of malware research centers, has identified proof-of-concept malicious code impacting today’s mobile devices. Some of the most prominent include SYMBOS_CABIR (a worm that spreads through Bluetooth), SYMBOS_COMWAR (malware that spreads via Bluetooth and MMS), and SYMBOS_PBSTEAL (spyware-like Trojan that attempts to steal user information).
