Syrian Foreign Minister Farouq Shara is expected to visit Washington in the next few weeks to discuss the possibility of restarting talks with Israel, reported Haaretz newspaper, quoting a Lebanese paper.

Al Mustaqbal newspaper said that US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is expected to visit Damascus soon as well, and that both visits were arranged with the help of King Abdullah of Jordan.

Syrian President Bashar Assad met with the King in Damascus on Wednesday, who for the past year has repeatedly expressed optimism regarding the Israeli-Syrian peace talks, said the paper.

Meanwhile, the London-based al-Hayat reported on Thursday that members of the Palestinian Legislative Council will visit Syria next week, with the goal of arranging a meeting in Damascus between Assad and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.

According to the paper, Damascus is now "more positive" about the idea of a visit from Arafat than it was in the past - Albawaba.com
