ALBAWABA - In light of the turmoil South Korea plunged into following the declaration of martial law, Interior Minister, Lee Sang-min announced that he will be stepping down, local media reported.

According to the JoongAng Ilbo newspaper, Lee Sang-min announced his resignation "in grave recognition of responsibility for failing to serve the public and the president well".

The newspaper reported that President Yoon Suk Yeol had accepted his resignation. Lee and Yoon are among those being investigated for potential insurrection following Tuesday's proclamation of martial law.

Yoon, who barely survived an impeachment motion in parliament on Saturday, was obliged to lift martial law after MPs rejected his declaration.

Earlier on Sunday, police arrested Kim Yong-hyun, who was the defense minister during the martial law operation. According to AFP, Kim has already been banned from traveling.
