ALBAWABA- In a landmark ruling, Kuwait's Ministerial Court sentenced Sheikh Talal Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, a senior member of the ruling family, to 14 years in prison and fined him 20 million Kuwaiti dinars (approximately $65 million) for embezzlement during his tenure as Minister of Defense and Interior.
The court found Sheikh Talal guilty in two corruption cases. He received a seven-year sentence and was dismissed from his position for offenses during his time as Minister of Defense.
In a separate case involving the Ministry of Interior, he was handed another seven-year sentence and ordered to repay nearly 10 million Kuwaiti dinars. An expatriate involved in the same case was sentenced to four years in prison.
This ruling is significant for Kuwait, a Gulf state ruled by its royal family, as it highlights the independence of its judiciary.
Sheikh Talal, who also served as Deputy Prime Minister, is one of the most senior royal figures to face such accountability, reflecting a growing commitment to tackling corruption at the highest levels of power.
