Director of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), George Tenet visited some of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border sites as well as the Tora Bora cave complex in order to review efforts to locate the world’s most wanted fugitive and Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
In its Thursday edition, the Peshawar-based The Frontier Post reported that George Tenet arrived in Peshawar, the provincial capital of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on Wednesday and visited the border areas. The daily added that Tenet was briefed about the operations being carried out to locate Osama bin Laden. The CIA agents, working throughout the areas as well as officials of the Pakistani authorities spoke to Tenet thoroughly regarding this matter.
Following that briefing, the CIA chief also visited the Tora Bora cave complex in Afghanistan, near the Pakistani border areas, the newspaper claimed. Tenet's current visit is directly related to the Osama bin Laden issue.
For Washington, in spite of its success in overthrowing the Taliban regime, which had provided safe shelter for Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda fighters, the whereabouts of the Saudi dissident still remain a mystery.
Following the removal of the Taliban militia and the subsequent intense operations aimed at finding bin Laden, there have been conflicting reports with regards to his fate. Some officials have suggested he had been killed during US bombings while others claimed the Saudi suspected terror mastermind was still alive. (Albawaba.com)
