Iran’s riot police wielding batons dispersed on Saturday a demonstration of about 3,000 teachers outside the office of president Mohammad Khatami.

The police, numbering several hundred, charged the crowd after they refused to disperse. At least 15 people were arrested, according to agencies. The police managed to stop the demonstration from getting closer than about 300 meters from the presidential grounds.

The teachers, who were calling for higher salaries, later left the area of the president's office peacefully. Their representatives met the parliamentary speaker, Mehdi Karroubi who voiced support for their cause but urged them not to disrupt schools to press their demands. (Albawaba.com)
