Israeli troops shot dead an Islamic Jihad activit in the Saida village near Tulkarm Sunday evening.

According to Israel Radio, undercover troops surrounded the home of Muhammad Abdel Ghani, 22, in an effort to arrest his brother. He was shot dead by soldiers as he attempted to flee the scene.

His brother, Riad Abdel Ghani, 30, is a member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade, the military wing of Fatah terror organization, the radio said. He escaped the Israeli raid.

Palestinians said another brother was shot in the leg during the incident. He was transferred to a Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance for treatment, according to the report.

Palestinians reported also a 16-year-old youth was seriously wounded in the head Sunday night by Israeli gunfire in a refugee camp east of Tulkarem.

Elsewhere, Israeli helicopters and tanks hit Gaza City for several hours early Monday, as gunships fired missiles at the headquarters compound of the Palestinian Preventative Security service and tanks shelling buildings, some of which caught fire, witnesses said.

Two Palestinian security officers and a TV cameraman working for Reuters news agency were lightly injured, doctors said.

The witnesses said a column of tanks also approached the security headquarters in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood on the outskirts of Gaza City and military vehicles were hammering away at the outer wall.

The occupation forces pulled out after more than three hours, leaving several of the 11 buildings in the security compound in ruins. At the main administration building, targeted for the first time in two years of fighting, furniture was smashed and computers destroyed.

Israel Radio Monday quoted the commander of the Israeli forces in Gaza Strip, as saying "the Preventative Security apparatus in Gaza is a terrorist organization in every sense."

As tanks moved into the city, Israeli gunboats opened fire on the shoreline, shelling the area of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's former office. The complex was destroyed in an Israeli attack several months ago.

Witnesses said troops fired shells at the house of Yusuf Muqdad, a Preventive Security officer arrested recently by the Israelis.
