Pakistan issued a strong protest Thursday against Indian efforts to build a fence along the "Working Boundary" between Indian-held Kashmir and Pakistan.

"The government of Pakistan calls upon the government of India to halt immediately all actions and steps being taken by it to erect a fence along the Working Boundary," the foreign office said in a statement.

It said Pakistan "reserves the right to take all measures appropriate and necessary to frustrate Indian designs to change the character of the Working Boundary."

The statement made no mention of what type of fence was under construction in the area north of the city of Sialkot, where the Indian-controlled zone of divided Kashmir shares a short frontier with Pakistan.

The Himalayan state of Kashmir was divided between Pakistan and India in 1947 but is claimed by both.

South Asia's nuclear rivals have fought two wars over Kashmir and came close to a third in 1999 when a bitter border conflict broke out in the northern Kargil area of Kashmir – ISLAMABAD (AFP)
