Four US soldiers died by hostile fire, while five others died and three were missing after their truck rolled over in a flash flood this weekend in separate incidents in western Iraq, the US army said Monday.
The U.S. military said it was "using all the resources available" to find the two Marines and a sailor who were missing after Sunday's accident, which occurred near the Asad air base in Anbar, near the Syrian border.
Three Marines and one sailor also were killed by hostile fire elsewhere, the military said Monday, the largest number of American deaths in a single attack in more than a month.
In violence targeting Iraqis, a suicide truck bomb went off Monday near a Shiite mosque in northeastern Baghdad as worshippers were leaving after evening prayers, killing at least 10 people and injuring 30, police said. The blast occurred about 8 p.m. near the al-Shroofi mosque in the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Shaab, police Capt. Ali al-Obaidi said. The truck, which was carrying dates, was driven by a suicide bomber, he said.
Gunmen killed a Shiite man and three of his relatives at their house in southern Baghdad, police said Monday. The killers lined up a brother, two sisters, and their uncle against the wall in their home in Dora and shot each of them, police Lt. Maithem Abdel-Razzaq said, according to the AP.
Also in Dora drive-by shooters killed a police captain outside his home late Sunday, police said.
Meanwhile, two Iraqis died and six wounded when a car bomb targeting a police patrol exploded in northeastern Baghdad, police said. Early Monday, a car bomb went off in the central district of Karradah, wounding two civilians, police said.
Police also discovered two bodies in eastern Baghdad - one in Mashtal that was handcuffed and shot in the head, another in Baladiyat that was strangled and covered with bandages.
