Iraq's army is powerful, well-trained and ready for a fight, a leading Iraqi newspaper warned the United States on Saturday.

Babel, run by President Saddam Hussein's oldest son Uday, bragged to enemies that Iraq "has a powerful army ready for any confrontation".

"In Iraq live a people excellently trained in the use of arms and who have for 11 years faced up to aggression in very difficult conditions," the daily reported.

"The scenario of an attack against our country betrays the irresponsibility of the American administration because little (US President George W.) Bush thinks his achievements in Afghanistan can happen again in Iraq," it added.

"The Iraqi people rally more round their leader, Saddam Hussein, who possesses wisdom and the capacity to mobilize the potential of our country in the face of a possible attack."

Babel claimed that the Mideast tour scheduled for later this month by US Vice President Dick Cheney "aims to lay the ground for an attack against Iraq and perhaps then against Iran." (Albawaba.com)
