Four earthquakes, measuring 5, 3.3, 2.7, 2.8 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale jolted the city of Amol in the northern Iranian province of Mazandaran in succession Monday night and early Tuesday.
The provincial seismological base registered the earthquakes between 23:00 [local time] and 3:51 [local time] with their epicenter southeast of Amol. No report has yet been received on possible casualties or damage inflicted by the quakes, according to IRNA.
Iran is one of the most quake-prone countries in the world with mild tremors an almost daily event. An official has reported that as of 1991 over 950 earthquakes have jolted Iran, claiming 17,600 lives and wounding 53,300 others. (Albawaba.com)
