DHL cargo plane crashes near Vilnius airport in Lithuania

ALBAWABA - A DHL Boeing 737 freighter traveling from Leipzig, Germany, to Vilnius Airport in Lithuania has crashed near Liepkalnis Hill, resulting in the possible death of one person as reports continue to emerge from the crash scene.

The Vilnius airport spokesperson told the press that "The city’s special services are working at the scene and leading the rescue efforts, as well as crews from the Vilnius Airport Fire Service,".

According to the Lithuanian local media station LRT, the Boeing 737-400 cargo crashed near residential buildings, causing a building to go up in flames.

The crash occurred at approximately 5.30 a.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) on Zirniu Street, south of the capital, CNN reported. Several aircraft departures have been delayed owing to "ongoing rescue work near Vilnius Airport," according to the spokesperson.

A Fire Protection and Rescue Department (PAGD) spokesperson told LRT Radio that at least four people were injured, including two pilots and two passengers.

The pilot, who had regained consciousness, was extracted from the wreckage and handed over to medical staff for treatment. According to police, one pilot has died.
