Omnia Sweidan released on bail after testimonies of women's abuse at Egyptian hospital

ALBAWABA - Documentary filmmaker and doctor Omnia Sweidan has sparked debate among Egyptian after a post in which she recorded her testimonies about abuse against women at an Egyptian hospital.

Sweidan was arrested after a long Facebook post on horrific violations against females in the obstetrics and gynecology department at Al-Shatby Hospital in Egypt. The doctor said she worked there for two months and it was "hell".

The doctor documented six incidents that happened in front of her eyes while she worked at the hospital, all of which included either sexual or physical abuse of women who went to the medical center for health care.

According to lawyer Mohamed Ramadan, Omnia Sweidan was accused of "spreading false news and misusing her Facebook account." He also confirmed that she was released on bail on Wednesday.

Human rights groups in Egypt joined their voices to show support for the doctor, and they called on authorities to release her immidiately and unconditionally. The hashtags, "Where'sOmnia and #FreedomforOmnia" were trending on Facebook. Additionally, many feminists also spoke up about similar abuse of women in different hospitals in the Arab country.

After public controversy, East Alexandria General Prosecution decided to release the doctor on bail of 20,000 Egyptian pounds.

On the other hand, a statement was made by Alexandria University regarding social media concerns about the obstetrics and gynecology department at Shatby University Hospital:

"The University affirms that patient dignity and safety, along with upholding professional ethics, are fundamental principles that cannot be compromised or violated under any circumstances. The right to file a complaint is guaranteed to all, and the University will not hesitate to investigate any report or complaint containing specific facts supported by documents or evidence that allow for verification. The University will take the necessary actions in accordance with applicable laws and regulations."

"In this context, the information circulating on social media is currently under investigation by the relevant authorities at the Faculty of Medicine, following established procedures for such cases. This investigation will ensure a thorough verification of the claims and a transparent and impartial determination of responsibility. The University emphasizes that any proven violation will be dealt with firmly, without cover-up or exception."
