The commander of US forces in the Gulf arrived Wednesday for talks in Jordan. The American embassy in Amman said General Tommy Franks' visit was part of a "wider tour of the region".

Meanwhile, US Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs William Burns, who is also touring the Middle East, was expected in the Jordanian capital later Wednesday, it said.

The two US officials were due to hold talks separately with King Abdullah II and high-level Jordanian officials.

Earlier Wednesday, a high-ranking government official told Al-Rai newspaper that Franks and Burns would hold talks in Amman with top-level officials on "developments in the region".

However, the official "denied" their visit was linked to a regional conference of foreign ministers due to be held Thursday in Turkey, the daily added. (Albawaba.com)
