There has been a strong call by the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Awqaf to set up independent personal affairs courts to look after domestic disputes, in an attempt to reduce the number of divorce cases and resolve problems between couples.

According to Gulf News, a memo issued by the Office of the Minister, Mohammed Nakhira Al Dhaheri, emphasized that the courts in the UAE, whether local or federal, are divided into three major categories – the Sharia, Civil, and Criminal – where the Sharia Courts play a central role in taking the domestic cases. The memo outlined that in most Muslim states some independent courts are in charge of domestic affairs and look after family problems, and do an excellent job. (Albawaba.com)
