Current Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed El Baradei, has been appointed for a third term as the organization's head.

Baradei, who has led the international investigation into both Iraq's and Iran's nuclear programs, has headed the organization since 1997.

The former Egyptian diplomat was sworn in at a general conference in Vienna according to AFX. He told reporters that "independence and impartiality will continue to guide my work" and that "'all of the challenges we face can only be overcome through a collective approach."

Baradei was chosen unanimously by the IAEA 35-nation board of governors, after the US dropped its previous opposition to him.

Under Baradei, the IAEA passed on Sunday a resolution calling for Iran to end the conversion of uranium and to answer more questions about its past nuclear activities. If Iran fails to comply with these demands, it may face economic and military sanctions.
