The eight survivors of an inferno in an Austrian mountain funicular train which killed as many as 172 people Saturday were all German, the APA news agency reported.

The survivors of the catastrophe escaped from the train by climbing out of windows, and were taken to hospital in the nearby resort of Zell am See, according to state television.

The Austrian mountain region south of the city of Salzburg where the catastrophe took place is heavily frequented by German tourists, and is only a few hours' drive from the border with Bavaria. VIENNA, Nov 11 (AFP)
