A week after the world's attention was turned to Yemen after an 8 year-old died from sexual injuries, Yemen is gaining more unwanted publicity in the bedroom - for its rising use of viagra.
Preparing to sleep with his bride on their first day as a married couple, a 25-year-old Yemeni man dosed up on five Viagra pills at one time which killed him before he was able to perform his husbandly duties.
Once the wedding hall was cleared out, the unnamed man left to join his wife at their new home. When he arrived, he “started to sweat heavily and felt his heart throbbing quickly…he later fainted and collapsed. The groom was rushed to the hospital but doctors’ attempts to revive him failed and he died,” reported the Yemini Arabic Language Daily Okaz Al Youm.
The paper issued a warning to young Yemenis against using "dangerous drugs" without medical consultation. Despite the warnings, the use of Viagra is a rising trend in the Middle East.
Surprisingly, one of the common causes for use of the drug is a rise in economy. As more Middle Eastern men are financially successful, they often marry more than one wife. Viagra has supported their ability to “provide” for multiple families.
Other related sources to an increase in use of Viagra are connected to the War on Terror.
"We're losing many men in terror attacks, and there are a lot of widows left behind,” says Ali, who is 26 and unmarried. “So I promised myself I'd marry a widow."
Then he adds, “...maybe two.”
