A TV host has called on the world to come together to fight the militant terrorists of the so-called Islamic State - rather than playing into their hands by dividing communities.

In a Facebook video which has been seen more than 17 million times, Muslim presenter Waleed Aly told viewers of Australian TV show The Project that the group - also known as ISIL and Daesh - were "weak" and preyed on people's fears.

In the five-minute speech, he explained that the militants were taking credit for acts of terrorism around the world to make it appear they are bigger than they are.

In the video, he goes on to highlight passages from IS propoganda magazines, which explicitly states part of the plan should be to get attacks attributed to Islamic State followers to prevent them appearing like "random killings".

This plays into their hands, he says, as it allows them to portray an image of power.

"There's a reason ISIL want to appear so powerful - why they don't want to acknowledge that the land they control has been taken from weak enemies, that they're pinned down by air strikes, or that just last weekend they lost a significant part of their territory," he said.

"ISIL don't want you to know that they would quickly be crushed if they ever faced a proper army on a real battlefield. They want you to fear them. They want you to get angry. They want all of us to become hostile.

"And here's why: ISIL's strategy is to split to world into two camps. It's that black and white."
