Authorities at the the UAE's Ministry of Interior (MoI) warned motorists to stop jumping red lights after revealing that 22 pedestrians were mown down and killed by drivers crossing the signal last year.
MoI also revealed that 821 people were injured in such accidents for 2012.
The ministry also revealed that 79 people were killed and 860 were injured due to speeding, recklessness and drivers’ inattentiveness
Brigadier Gaith Hassan Al Zaabi, director general for traffic coordination at the MoI, said: "Motorists should drive within the acceptable speed limits and should stop jumping red lights to reduce the increasing number of run over accidents that result in deaths and injuries to innocent people," he said.
The officer also urged drivers to always give priority to pedestrians.
He said people should cross the roads only at pedestrian crossing areas or use underpasses and footbridges to avoid the risk of being knocked down.
