ALBAWABA — Israel has sparked a new controversy after making a satirical tweet in Persian on the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on its official account on X, gaining global notice amid ongoing tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv.

The tweet criticized the huge funeral procession in Tehran, saying that many people came to the ceremony "not to mourn but to make sure he was really dead." The letter was posted after Khamenei was killed in an Israeli bombing at the commencement of the latest confrontation between Israel, the United States and Iran.

The remark rapidly ricocheted across social media, the latest volley in a growing information war between the two old foes after months of military confrontation.

Iranian authorities have estimated that as many as 20 million people could attend the funeral services performed in Tehran over the weekend in one of the biggest public gatherings in the country's contemporary history.

The state funeral was postponed until after Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding, enabling the authorities to proceed with the ceremonial ceremony, the Telegraph said.

Khamenei, 86, was reportedly killed together with 12 members of his family in Israeli airstrikes that hit his apartment on 28 February, the first day of the war.
