The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs has directed municipalities and secretariats across the Kingdom to rename some of Riyadh’s streets following a comprehensive review.
The ministry has invited citizens to participate in the naming process and stressed on selecting Arabic names.
The move comes in the wake of several complaints filed by citizens deeming some street names inappropriate, while others are said to be a repetition of existing names.
In a statement, the ministry said that it is in the process of establishing a website where municipalities and secretariats can participate in the naming of streets and assign numbers to properties according to a revised directory of street names.
In Mecca, a new system is in place to rename several districts and neighborhoods after historic events or figures.
Osama Zaytoni, media and publications director at Mecca’s municipality, said a committee consisting of officials, mayors and academics from Umm Al-Qura University, along with seniors, will embark on naming neighborhoods and districts.
