AFP reports that the French Council for the Muslim Religion (CFCM) stated Tuesday that they want to require licensing for imams, in a new way to counteract extremism.
The CFCM proposed testing both the theological knowledge and compliance with country rules. They would also require potential imams to sign a charter that agrees to "respect the laws of the Republic."
The organization also suggested creating a special religious council to challenge extremist propaganda, according to AFP. The council would use theological arguments and portray a moderate, peaceful interpretation of Islam.
"The time for action has come. The Muslims of France will play their part," Anouar Kbibech, President of CFCM, said in a recent statement.
After the recent Daesh attacks on Paris, killing over 100 people, the Muslim community has faced fear and backlash. Islamophobic hate crimes have increased drastically in the past few weeks. The CFCM hopes to take serious measures to prove that French Muslims are in no way related to, or supportive of, extremist militant behavior.
