A man set a woman on fire after a disagreement in a restaurant in Japan, according to reports from local media on Saturday.
Police reported that the 52-year-old Iranian man poured liquid over a 36-year-old Filipina woman, his girlfriend, before setting her alight inside a restaurant in Ibaraki prefecture, located north of Tokyo, on Friday.
A rare act of violence in the country, restaurant staff were shocked as they called for an ambulance, saying: "People are burning."
Both parties were rushed to hospital with severe burns and remain unconscious, according to a statement released by public broadcaster NHK.
Police are treating the case as attempted murder.
Kyodo News reported that this is not the first time this couple has been involved in violent disputes. The pair had previously been advised to stay away from each other following a dispute involving their child.
