‘EEG successfully collects 166,183 kg of waste during the month of September itself

The Emirates Environmental Group, a professional working body dedicated to environmental awareness and sustainability, announced that they have collected a total of 166,183 kilograms of waste during the month of September alone, as part of their Waste Management programs. 

Ms. Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson of EEG, stated that the month of September itself witnessed a collection of 120,702 kilograms of paper through joint efforts of 348 members of the Group. During the month of August, students of Dubai Men’s College as well as Dubai Women’s College were able to collect 6920 and 4115 kilograms of waste respectively. This amount of waste collected was thereby increased by an astounding 106% in the month of September on its own. These numbers indicate a phenomenal growth in the amount of waste collected and recycled per month. 

Chairperson Habiba has added that 33 of EEG’s trusted members have also managed to collect 192 kilograms of aluminum, a 50% increase since the previous month of August as well as 38,498 kilograms of glass: - a 112% increase since the month of August in the latter case.

165 members have also successfully collected 6791 kilograms of plastic, showing a 3% increase since August. 21 members collected 462 empty ink cartridges, showing an increase of 32%, while another 13 participants collected 398 mobile phones, indicating a 104% increase since August.

She added that EEG’s Waste Management programs have managed to collect through 18 of its members 533 kilograms of Tetrapak beverage cartons, as well as 269 kilograms of batteries through 7 EEG members alone.

Chairperson Habiba has also declared that EEG’s Waste Management programs have experienced steady growth of waste collection during the first half of 2012 when compared with the same period in 2011.

Moreover, she pointed out that the Emirates Environmental Group aims to involve the community at large with its Waste Management programs. This is why all sectors of the society are targeted by EEG; ranging from individuals and families, private and public sectors as well as academic and government institutions. 

One of EEG’s objectives as an organization dedicated to advancing environmental awareness and education is to instill a sense of responsibility and stewardship within the youth community so that they in turn can become pioneers of a green and sustainable future.

EEG achieves this by providing for the public a variety of waste management projects and opportunities to engage and participate in so that recycling can truly become an embedded habit with our community.  Eventually this habit will be adopted by everyone as a part of everyday behavior and good practice.
