ALBAWABA - Edi Rama, the Prime Minister of Albania, has named a virtual, AI-generated minister to his new cabinet. This is the first time in the world that a political leader has done this.  Dela, which means "the sun" in Albanian, is the digital minister who will be in charge of government contracts to fight corruption.

Rama promised that Dela would make sure that all public tenders are completely free of corruption and that every euro of public money is handled openly.

Dela has worked in public service before.  Earlier this year, she was introduced as an AI-powered virtual assistant on the e-Albania platform, where she helped people find official documents and public services.

According to government data, Dela has helped issue 36,600 digital documents and provide almost 1,000 online services since she was launched.

Her digital avatar looks like a woman in traditional Albanian clothes, which stands for both new technology and old traditions.

Political and EU Background

Rama was elected to a fourth term in a row in May, which led to this appointment.  In the next few days, he is expected to show parliament his new government, with fighting corruption as a top priority.

Albania has been trying to join the European Union for a long time, and fighting corruption is still a big part of that. Transparency in government is a must for joining the EU.  By 2030, Rama wants Albania to be a member of the EU.
