ALBAWABA - A Ukrainian drone attack ignited a blaze on a Russian freight train in the Russian-held part of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region in the latest effort by Kyiv to disrupt Moscow’s military logistics.

Online videos showed several cars carrying fuel tanks engulfed in flames and thick black smoke rising above the railway, Ukrainian officials said. The attack temporarily halted rail traffic used to supply Russian forces in southern Ukraine. The operation is part of Ukraine’s mounting campaign to strike fuel transportation and logistics infrastructure supporting Russian military operations, Reuters said.

Ukrainian military sources said the train targeted was carrying fuel for Russian forces operating in occupied territories. The strike comes after a series of recent Ukrainian drone attacks on fuel tankers, oil depots and supply routes linked to Crimea and the Sea of Azov, a strategy that has seen Kyiv chip away at Russia’s logistical capabilities rather than focus on frontline positions. Ukraine has been increasingly focused on disrupting fuel supplies to areas controlled by Russia in an attempt to isolate Crimea and strain Moscow’s supply network, Reuters reports.

The attack comes as long-range drone warfare continues to redefine the conflict, with both sides increasingly targeting energy infrastructure and transportation networks deep behind the front lines. In recent weeks, Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russian oil facilities and logistics centers, while Russia has responded with widespread drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, highlighting the growing reliance on unmanned systems in the nearly four-year-old war, AP reported.

Neither Moscow nor Kyiv could verify independently the claims of the latest strike, but the incident underscores the strategic importance of rail transport in supporting Russian military campaigns. Analysts say strikes on fuel trains and supply convoys can have an outsized effect by slowing the movement of equipment, ammunition and fuel to frontline units, adding to logistical pressure as fighting continues across southern and eastern Ukraine. Both countries are expected to continue to focus on critical supply infrastructure as the war becomes ever more attritional, AP and Reuters reported.
