Former tennis star Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has claimed that Novak Djokovic went through a period where he “wanted to be Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal.”
Djokovic tried to emulate his rivals at the start and took his time before assuming his warrior image.
He went on to clinch 24 Grand slam titles over the span of 20 years despite the rivalry of the 'Big Three'.
Tsonga told Generation Do It Yourself podcast: “I consider that he (Djokovic) had a period where he didn’t want to be himself. He wanted to be Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal, when perhaps he should have remained himself all along.
“I think today he is himself. And even if it is divisive, I think that’s why it is appreciated by many people. Because now he’s completely honest."
Djokovic is still going strong despite being 36 and will be aiming to remain on top for as long as possible.
