Jannik Sinner started his Australian Open 2025 title defense with a hard-fought 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory over Nicolas Jarry, overcoming early challenges on Rod Laver Arena. Despite a shaky second set, where he wasted a set point with an ill-timed drop shot, Sinner regained his composure and dominated the third set with two key service breaks.

Sinner, ranked number one, had to grind through two intense tiebreak sets against Chilean Jarry (ranked 35th). However, once he secured his first break in the third set, he quickly found his rhythm and sealed the match in straight sets. This victory extended Sinner's winning streak to 16 matches, including 14 consecutive straight-set wins.

Reflecting on his performance, Sinner acknowledged the close nature of the match, stating, "The first sets could have gone either way, but when I broke first in the third set, it gave me room to breathe. I'm happy with how I handled the tough situation."

The Italian has proven his resilience at Melbourne Park, having come from two sets down in last year’s final to defeat Daniil Medvedev and claim his first Grand Slam title. Sinner’s performance sets him up for a strong campaign in this year’s Australian Open.

Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek, the five-time major winner from Poland, defeated top-ranked doubles player Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-4. Swiatek continues to show her dominance in singles as well.

Coco Gauff, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, overcame a sun-soaked Rod Laver Arena to beat 2020 champion Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-3. Gauff, who recently helped the U.S. win the United Cup, delivered a strong performance despite initial struggles with visibility due to the sun.

Day 2 of the Australian Open also featured several other key matchups, with top players like Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz set to take the court. The competition is heating up as the world’s best players battle it out for the first major title of 2025.
