Riyad Mahrez’s skills this season have been on par with Lionel Messi, according to former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.
The Algeria international dazzled once again as his goal and assist fired Leicester City to a 2-1 victory over Chelsea, and to top spot in the Premier League.
Mahrez now has 11 goals and seven assists in the Premier League this season and Carragher insists the 24-year-old will be attracting interest from Europe’s top clubs with his displays this term.
“Mahrez is doing things with that left foot that I have only seen Messi do,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“[Cesar] Azpilicueta was one of the best defenders in the League last season and he could not handle him. Mahrez is playing so well that top clubs in Europe will be looking at him.
"It's important that they [Leicester] keep their players in January. People might come in for Vardy and Mahrez, but if the players are smart they will stay where they are.
“They are playing great football, the club's got momentum and if they get into the top four it would be an incredible story.”
