FIFA Vice President and Jordan Football Association President HRH Prince Ali on Tuesday announced that retired Egyptian footballer Hossam Hassan will be the coach of the national football team beginning next month.
Following a meeting of the executive committee of the Jordan Football Association, Prince Ali said that Hassan, a prolific goal scorer, will replace Adnan Hamad to lead the national team in the Asian play-offs for the intercontinental qualifiers to the 2014 World Cup, the AFC Asian Cup qualification round and the West Asian Football Championship, according to a statement by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
The prince also commended Hamad’s efforts, describing the Iraqi coach as “highly dedicated” and bringing “tremendous achievements” to Jordan’s football team, Petra reported.
Hassan, a former striker for the renowned Egyptian football club Al Ahly, played more than 150 games for Egypt and scored more than 50 goals, according to web sources.
Last week, Jordan defeated Oman 1-0, keeping alive its hopes of reaching the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The win puts Jordan in third place in Group B behind Japan and Australia, which both secured automatic qualification to Brazil.
As third-place finishers in both Asian qualifying groups playing in a two-leg play-off, Jordan will meet Uzbekistan, from Group A, on September 6 and 10.
The winner will then play the fifth-placed side in South America in an intercontinental home-and-away play-off on November 15 and 19, according to the world football governing body, FIFA.
