Carlo Ancelotti's time at Real Madrid is reportedly coming to an end, with club president Florentino Perez said to have made the decision to part ways with the Italian manager at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season.

A decorated reign, but Arsenal defeat changes everything

Ancelotti, who is in his second spell with Los Blancos, has led the club to a remarkable list of titles, including three Champions League trophies, two La Liga titles, and two Copa del Rey wins. Last season, he guided the team to a famous league and Champions League double.

However, the club’s 5-1 aggregate defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals has reportedly been the tipping point for Perez, who is said to be seeking a new direction starting this summer.

Ancelotti: “Maybe this is the end”

Speaking after the defeat to Arsenal, Ancelotti didn’t shy away from discussing the uncertainty surrounding his future.

“It could be tomorrow, next year, or in ten years. Whenever I leave this club, I’ll only have words of gratitude,” he said.
“We did everything we could, but Arsenal were better over the two legs. We struggled to break them down, and they defended with intensity.”

Still fighting on three fronts

Despite their Champions League exit, Real Madrid still have plenty to fight for this season. They remain in contention for the La Liga title, are preparing for the Copa del Rey final, and will feature in the FIFA Club World Cup.

“We have three competitions left. It’s a tough moment, but we’ll keep working,” Ancelotti added. “There’s a sad side to football, and we have to manage it like we do the happy side.”

Who could replace Ancelotti?

Former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso is currently the frontrunner to succeed Ancelotti. The 43-year-old has made a huge impact at Bayer Leverkusen, leading them to a domestic double last season and a Europa League final appearance.

Alonso’s tactical acumen and connection to the club make him an attractive candidate, and he’s reportedly Perez’s preferred choice.

While Alonso is the leading option, Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is also admired by decision-makers at the Bernabéu. The Spaniard impressed with his work at Rayo Vallecano and has continued to shine in the Premier League.

As Real Madrid prepare for a new era, the pressure is now on to find the right man to lead them into the future.
