ALBAWABA - A video caused a huge shock on the internet after a young man fell into a fire pit in India during the celebration of the first day of Muharram.

According to India Today, multiple fire-related incidents were reported to Indian authorities during Muharram processions, most notably in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka areas.

Indian man dies falling into a fire pit during Muharram rituals

Deccan Chronicle reported that a 28-year-old man was caught on video falling into a fire hole during a traditional Muharram fire ritual. The person is said to have suffered severe burns before succumbing to his wounds on Saturday morning.

According to the agency, the person fell into the Alayi Kuni [a fire pit] ritual during the Muharram event at Kyadigehallu village in Kurugodu taluk.

Authorities identified the man as Devaraj. It is said that Devaraj was walking in the fire pit as per the ritual. He was holding a torch in one hand and a can of oil in the other. While walking on fire, he lost balance and fell, sustaining serious injuries.

The incident took place on Friday, and the person was taken to the Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) in Ballari. But he died on Saturday morning.
