ALBAWABA - In an unexpected move, McDonald's has removed images of food from its billboards across Germany, igniting curiosity and raising questions about the reason.
People across the European country captured before and after a billboard showing McDonald's famous French fries box, one empty and the other filled and asked why the company is removing food.
According to sources, in Germany, McDonald's decided to remove food images from its billboards during daylight hours for Ramadan, a month during which Muslims are fasting from dawn to sunset.
McDonald's Germany launched a new outdoor campaign in which digital billboards sync with the sun, revealing food only after dark throughout the month of Ramadan. However, not all people were in favor of the campaign; as one said, "Germany is a Christian country if I’m not mistaken."
Another person revealed, "What about the majority of people who don't observe Ramadan? This ad campaign makes sense for the Middle East but not the West." An X user commented, "That’s actually a very clever and culturally aware move."
According to German data, about 5.3 to 5.6 million Muslims with a migration background reside in the European country, making up around 6.4 to 6.7 percent of the total population as of 2020–2021.
