Flooding in Malawi has seriously hampered efforts by the UN World Food Programme to aid needy people in the south of the country, a WFP official said Thursday.
Adama Diop-Faye, WFP's country director in Malawi, told AFP that trucks could not reach six of the worst-hit districts, of a total of 27, because of inaccessible roads.
"We have had a lot of transport constraints," she said.
Only 600 tons of food aid has been distributed to nearly half of the 60,000 targetted flood victims, Diop-Faye said.
She said two army helicopters, which have a capacity of four tonnes each, were not in use because they were undergoing maintenance.
