The United States on Monday renewed a 14-month-old travel warning for Algeria, advising US citizens to carefully consider the risks of visiting the North African country due to terrorism concerns.
The State Department said it was re-issuing its last warning of December 11, 2001, to alert Americans on continued security concerns in Algeria.
"The Department of State urges US citizens to evaluate carefully considerations for their security and safety before traveling to Algeria," it said in a statement.
"Although markedly fewer incidents have taken place in Algeria in recent years, random terrorist attacks still occur in rural and remote areas, on public transportation outside the major cities, and in some parts of the country at night," it added.
The department called on Americans already in Algeria to take "prudent security measures" and noted the extremely tight travel restrictions that it has adopted for US diplomats posted there. (Albawaba.com)
