The Syrian Foreign Ministry summoned on Wednesday the U.S. Charge d’Affairs in Damascus and notified him with Syria’s strong protest against ”piracy operation carried out by U.S. Sixth Fleet warships in the Meditteranean aginst two Syrian commercial vessels shipping citrus from Turkish port of Mersin.”

The minsitry asked an explanation from the U.S. embassy regarding this violation of international law, reported SANA.

Earlier it was reported that the US Sixth Fleet searched two Syrian-registered merchant vessels off Cyprus as part of Washington’s anti-terrorism campaign but found nothing suspicious.

A statement issued by the U.S. European command in Germany said the US navy had intercepted the merchant vessels 'Captain Mohamed' and 'Hajji Rahmeh' north of Cyprus on Sunday, said the official Saudi news agency (SPA).
